Insurance and Traffic Regulations Guide for British Tourists Renting a Car in Dalaman
If you’re planning a holiday in Dalaman and are coming from the UK, renting a car is a great way to discover the natural and cultural beauty of southwest Turkey. But before you start your engine, it’s important to know the local driving regulations and insurance options available. Many British tourists are surprised to discover key differences from the UK road system.
In this guide, we explain everything you need to know about car insurance and traffic regulations in Turkey, specifically in the Dalaman region, so you can enjoy your trip worry-free.
What Insurance Do You Need When Renting a Car in Dalaman?
When you rent a car in Turkey, basic insurance is usually included. However, this level of coverage isn’t always enough to protect you from all possible risks. Therefore, it’s essential to understand the different options available, especially if you’re traveling with family or planning long trips along the Aegean coast.
Types of Insurance:
- CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): Covers damage to the vehicle in the event of a collision, but with an excess. It does not include wheels, windows, or underbody.
- Super CDW or Full Coverage: Also covers tires, glass, theft, and vandalism, and eliminates (or reduces) the excess. This is the most recommended option for British tourists.
- TP (Theft Protection): Protection against vehicle theft.
- TPL (Third Party Liability): Required by law, it covers third-party liability.
Roadside Assistance: Very useful in rural areas, especially if you plan to visit places like Ölüdeniz or Saklıkent National Park.
Practical Tips for British Tourists When Driving in Dalaman
Here are some helpful tips we’ve gathered from our own British customers:
- Use navigation apps with up-to-date maps
Google Maps and Waze work well in Turkey, but make sure you have mobile data or download offline maps if you plan to drive in mountainous or rural areas.
- Refuel at familiar stations
There are many gas stations in Dalaman, but we recommend refueling at chains like Opet, Shell, or Petrol Ofisi. Make sure your car uses the correct fuel (diesel or gasoline).
- Respect parking zones
In tourist areas, parking is regulated. Look for signs like “ücretli otopark” (paid parking). If you park illegally, you could face fines or being towed.
- Don’t leave visible objects in the car
Although Dalaman is safe, it is always advisable not to leave visible belongings in the vehicle.
- In case of accident:
Call the police (155) and an ambulance (112) if there are injuries.
Inform the rental company immediately.
Do not move the car until the authorities arrive if there are injuries or there is a dispute about fault.
